This feels like our most mature offering so far and is my personal favourite on the EP. I had this core image of a person being totally on fire but being the last to know or care about it; I loved it as a metaphor for trying to drudge through life even as things are falling apart for you and everyone can see it. But to be honest I had so much fun just taking that image at face value and running with it for a full 3 minutes - following this guy to work as he tries to get through a day without drawing attention to the fact he's on fire, and slowly, reluctantly acknowledging it: "It appears that I'm on fire but I think it will go out soon.
lyrics
It was the same
Routine and
There was nothing unusual
Nothing untoward and you will laugh
At me when
I confess there’s a mess
That I struggle to suppress
I’m on fire
I’m on fire
In this burning room
Oh yes I’m on fire but
I think it will go out soon
Well there were points
And panic
There was mumbling rumbling
All around the water cooler
I’d have had it
In control without all
Of them fixing up a fuss
And now my ears are burning
Just like the desk is burning
No doubt the smoke’s alarming
Who’s it harming?
Try to keep cool
Cause it’s all by the by
I’m on fire
I’m on fire
In this burning room
Take what action you require but
I think you should know I’m on fire
I’m on fire
In this burning room
It appears that I’m on fire but
I think it will go out
Soon
It’s just a minor affliction,
I wouldn’t pay it any mind if I were you
Despite the general depiction
It’s just a small room
As it burns
Don’t affirm the crime
It’s benign
I’m unharmed
It’s just a small room you can silence the alarm
But I’m on fire
I’m on fire
In this burning room
Just a body upon a pyre but
I think you should know I’m on fire
I’m on fire
In this burning room
I’ll admit that I’m on fire but
I hope it will go out soon
